The Week Ahead: Fed Minutes in Focus; Retail Earnings Continue

Retail stocks will again highlight the earnings schedule, including Dow components Wal-Mart Stores, Inc. (NYSE:WMT) and Home Depot Inc (NYSE:HD)

The economic schedule is busy next week. Wall Street will receive several updates on the housing market, while hearing a number of speeches from regional Fed presidents. Traders will also get a chance to look through the minutes from the Federal Open Market Committee's (FOMC) April meeting, when they're released on Wednesday. 

As for earnings, it's another big week for retail stocks, as Dow components Wal-Mart Stores, Inc. (NYSE:WMT) and Home Depot Inc (NYSE:HD) are set to report, along with sector peers Target Corporation (NYSE:TGT), Lowe's Companies, Inc. (NYSE:LOW), and Foot Locker, Inc. (NYSE:FL). 

Below is a brief list of some key market events scheduled for the upcoming week. All earnings dates listed below are tentative and subject to change. Please check with each company's respective website for official reporting dates.

Monday, May 16

The week kicks off with the Empire State manufacturing index, the NAHB housing market index, and Treasury International Capital (TIC) data. Minneapolis Fed President Neel Kashkari will give a speech in Minnesota after the close. The earnings schedule is relatively quiet on Monday. 

Tuesday, May 17

The consumer price index (CPI), housing starts, and industrial production numbers will come out on Tuesday. San Francisco Fed President John Williams and Dallas Fed President Robert Kaplan will speak in the afternoon. Meanwhile, HD, Red Robin Gourmet Burgers (RRGB), TJX Companies (TJX), and Vipshop (VIPS) will take a turn in the earnings confessional.

Wednesday, May 18

The FOMC minutes from the April meeting will be released, as will weekly crude inventories. Stepping up to the earnings plate Wednesday are Cisco Systems (CSCO), American Eagle (AEO), Hormel Foods (HRL), L Brands (LB), LOW, salesforce.com (CRM), Staples (SPLS), Take-Two Interactive (TTWO), TGT, and Urban Outfitters (URBN).

Thursday, May 19

On Thursday, the Philadelphia Fed business outlook survey and weekly jobless claims will hit the Street. WMT, Advance Auto Parts (AAP), Applied Materials (AMAT), Autodesk (ADSK), Dick's Sporting Goods (DKS), Gap (GPS), and Ross Stores (ROST) are due to unveil quarterly earnings. 

Friday, May 20

Existing home sales make up Friday's economic schedule. A short list of companies due to report earnings includes Buckle (BKE), Campbell Soup (CPB), Deere (DE), and FL.
