The Week Ahead: Countdown to GDP; Yellen to Speak

The Fed will be front and center on next week's economic calendar, with a raft of regional Fed presidents scheduled to give speeches in the wake of Wednesday's hawkish minutes from the central bank's April meeting. Capping it all off, Fed Chair Janet Yellen will speak on Friday -- which is also when highly anticipated gross domestic product (GDP) data will be released.

Meanwhile, the earnings calendar slows down significantly, with just a handful of high-profile names set to report results. Retail earnings will continue to dominate, though, with reports from retailers like Best Buy Co Inc (NYSE:BBY) and Tiffany & Co. (NYSE:TIF) due. A handful of solar stocks could also move on earnings.

Below is a brief list of some key market events scheduled for the upcoming week. All earnings dates listed below are tentative and subject to change. Please check with each company's respective website for official reporting dates.

Monday, May 23

There is nothing notable on the economic calendar, but St. Louis Fed President James Bullard, San Francisco Fed President John Williams, and Philadelphia Fed President Patrick Harker are all scheduled to speak. Meanwhile, the earnings lineup is relatively quiet.

Tuesday, May 24

Tuesday's docket includes the Markit flash purchasing managers manufacturing index (PMI) and new home sales. Earnings are slated for AutoZone (AZO), BBY, DSW (DSW), Hewlett Packard Enterprise (HPE), Intuit (INTU), and Toll Brothers (TOL).

Wednesday, May 25

The international trade balance and regularly scheduled crude inventories are due out on Wednesday. Plus, Dallas Fed President Robert Kaplan will take part in a moderated question-and-answer session. Taking their turns in the earnings confessional are Costco Wholesale (COST), Express (EXPR), Guess? (GES), HP Inc (HPQ), Infoblox (BLOX), Lions Gate Entertainment (LGF), NetApp (NTAP), and TIF.

Thursday, May 26

Hitting the Street Thursday are durable goods orders, weekly jobless claims, and the pending home sales index, while Bullard will give his second speech of the week. Among the companies headed to the earnings stage are Abercrombie & Fitch (ANF), Burlington Stores (BURL), Deckers Outdoor (DECK), Dollar General (DG), Dollar Tree (DLTR), GameStop (GME), Palo Alto Networks (PANW), Signet Jewelers (SIG), Splunk (SPLK), Trina Solar (TSL), and Ulta Salon, Cosmetics & Fragrance (ULTA).

Friday, May 27

The week closes out with preliminary first-quarter GDP data and the Thomson Reuters/University of Michigan consumer sentiment survey, as well as a speech from Fed Chair Janet Yellen. JA Solar (JASO) and JinkoSolar (JKS) will step in the earnings spotlight.
