Charles Evans kicks things off on Monday
The first week of September is an abbreviated one, with the stock market closed on Monday for Labor Day. Nevertheless, the holiday-shortened week will bring the highly anticipated monthly nonfarm payrolls report, as well as the ADP private-sector jobs update. Plus, no fewer than nine Fed speeches are scheduled, including multiple appearances from New York Fed President John Williams and Chicago Fed President Charles Evans. A handful of tech earnings will be in focus, as well, with Broadcom (AVGO), Finisar (FNSR), Marvell Technology (MRVL), and Secureworks (SCWX) on the list.

U.S. markets are closed for Labor Day on Monday, Sept. 3., though Charles Evans is scheduled to speak in Argentina.
On Tuesday, Sept. 4, Evans will speak again, while data is expected on construction spending, the Markit purchasing managers manufacturing index (PMI), and the Institute for Supply Management's (ISM) manufacturing index. For earnings, RH (RH) and Workday (WDAY) will report.
Motor vehicle sales and international trade data is slated for Wednesday, Sept. 5. Plus, speeches from John Williams, Minneapolis Fed President Neel Kashkari, and Atlanta Fed President Raphael Bostic are anticipated.
AeroVironment (AVAV), Ctrip.com (CTRP), Duluth Holdings (DLTH), HD Supply (HDS), Secureworks (SCWX), Vera Bradley (VRA), and Verint Systems (VRNT) are slated to release earnings.
Thursday, Sept. 6, is a busy day for economic data, with the ADP private-sector payrolls report, weekly jobless claims, the holiday-delayed weekly crude inventories, productivity and labor costs, Markit's PMI services index, factory orders, and the ISM non-manufacturing index reports expected. Plus, John Williams will take the stage in Buffalo, New York.
For earnings, Barnes & Noble (BKS), Broadcom (AVGO), Finisar (FNSR), Five Below (FIVE), GameStop (GME), Lands' End (LE), Marvell Technology (MRVL), Navistar (NAV), Palo Alto Networks (PANW), and Zumiez (ZUMZ) are scheduled.
The Labor Department's August jobs report will headline the action on Friday, Sept. 7, with the Baker-Hughes rig count and speeches from Dallas Fed President Robert Kaplan, Boston Fed President Eric Rosengren and Cleveland Fed President Loretta Mester also in focus. Genesco (GCO) is scheduled to report earnings.
