Blue-Chip Earnings Highlight Holiday-Shortened Week

Earnings season heats up next week with a slew of Dow names on the docket. American Express (AXP), Goldman Sachs (GS), IBM (IBM), Johnson & Johnson (JNJ), and UnitedHealth (UNH) are among the blue chips set to report. Also ready to report will be streaming name Netflix (NFLX) and Coke rival PepsiCo (PEP). Housing starts, retail sales, and a handful of Fed speeches are also due, and Pinterest's (PINS) initial public offering (IPO) could also make noise. Markets will, however, be closed on Good Friday, April 19, ahead of the Easter holiday.

Below is a brief list of some key market events scheduled for the upcoming week. All earnings dates listed below are tentative and subject to change. Please check with each company's respective website for official reporting dates.

The Empire State manufacturing survey and Treasury International Capital (TIC) data will be released on Monday, April 15, while Chicago Fed President Charles Evans is scheduled for two speeches. On the earnings front, big banks Goldman Sachs (GS), Charles Schwab (SCHW), and Citigroup (C) are scheduled.

On Tuesday, April 16, Dallas Fed President Robert Kaplan will speak, while industrial production data and the National Association of Home Builders (NAHB) housing market index are due. Slated for earnings are IBM (IBM), Johnson & Johnson (JNJ), UnitedHealth (UNH), Netflix (NFLX), Bank of America (BAC), BlackRock (BLK), Progressive (PGR), and WesBanco (WSBC).

Another set of Fed speeches will surface Wednesday, April 17, with St. Louis Fed President James Bullard and Philadelphia Fed President Patrick Harker at the proverbial podium. Data on international trade, MBA mortgage applications, and the weekly crude inventories report are also due, as is the Fed's Beige Book. A big day for earnings, Abbott Labs (ABT), Alcoa (AA), E*TRADE (ETFC), Las Vegas Sands (LVS), Morgan Stanley (MS), Pier 1 Imports (PIR), PepsiCo (PEP), Skechers (SKX), Textron (TXT), United Continental (UAL), and U.S. Bancorp (USB) will report.

For Thursday, April 18, data on the Fed balance sheet, business inventories, retail sales, weekly jobless claims, and the Philadelphia Fed business outlook survey are expected. In addition, Pinterest (PINS) is expected to go public. On deck for earnings are American Express (AXP), Travelers (TRV), Honeywell (HON), KeyCorp (KEY), Philip Morris (PM), SunTrust Banks (STI), and Synchrony Financial (SYF).

Housing starts are slated for release on Friday, April 19, though U.S. markets will be closed for Good Friday as the weekend welcomes the Easter holiday.
