Earnings Season Begins with Big Banks, Netflix

Johnson & Johnson and UnitedHealth are two other blue chips set to report

Earnings season is finally upon us, with the big banks set to kick things off on Tuesday. Several other high-profile names are set to report, too, like Netflix (NFLX) on Wednesday, Intuitive Surgical (ISRG) on Thursday, and Coca-Cola (KO) on Friday. On the data front, manufacturing numbers will be in focus early on in the week, while there will also be a few reports out of the housing sector.

Below is a brief list of some key market events scheduled for the upcoming week. All earnings dates listed below are tentative and subject to change. Please check with each company's respective website for official reporting dates.

There's absolutely nothing on the schedule for Monday, Oct. 14, and the bond market is closed for Columbus Day. On Tuesday, Oct. 15, the Empire State manufacturing index comes out, and there will be speeches from St. Louis Fed President James Bullard, Atlanta Fed President Raphael Bostic, and San Francisco Fed President Mary Daly.

For earnings that Tuesday, blue chips Goldman Sachs (GS), Johnson & Johnson (JNJ), JPMorgan Chase (JPM), and UnitedHealth (UNH) are set to report. There will also be quarterly updates from BlackRock (BLK), Citigroup (C), J.B. Hunt (JBHT), Wells Fargo (WFC), and United Airlines (UAL). 

On Wednesday, Oct. 16, retail sales will come out, along with business inventories, the housing market index, the Fed's Beige Book, and Treasury International Capital data. Chicago Fed President Charles Evans will speak. The earnings schedule features IBM (IBM), Abbott Laboratories (ABT), Alcoa (AA), Ally Financial (ALLY), Bank of America (BAC), Bank of New York Mellon (BK), CSX (CSX), NFLX, PNC (PNC), Steel Dynamics (STLD), and United Rentals (URI).

The schedule for Thursday, Oct. 17, has weekly jobless claims, the Philadelphia Fed business outlook survey, housing starts, industrial production, and the weekly update for domestic crude inventories. Both Evans and New York Fed President John Williams are slated to speak. E*Trade (ETFC), Honeywell (HON), ISRG, KeyCorp (KEY), Morgan Stanley (MS), Philip Morris (PM), Snap-on (SNA), Textron (TXT), and Union Pacific (UNP) will report earnings.

Rounding out the week on Friday, Oct. 18, will be speeches from Dallas Fed President Robert Kaplan, Kansas City Fed President Esther George, and Minneapolis Fed President Neel Kashkari. Earnings will come from American Express (AXP), KO, Kansas City Southern (KSU), and Schlumberger (SLB).
