Early in the day on Tuesday the blue-chip index struggled, as it was announced that coronavirus deaths in the U.S. topped 200,000. Additionally, the S&P 500 and Nasdaq notched a victory, both snapping four-day losing streaks as investors reacted to U.S. Federal Reserve Chairman Jerome Powell's remarks that the
central bank will support the economy for "as long as it takes."
The Dow Jones Industrial Average (DJI - 27,288.18) tacked on 140.5 points, or 0.5% on Tuesday. Nike (NKE) was led the list yesterday with an 3.1% rise, while UnitedHealth (UNH) landed at the bottom yesterday with a 1.7% drop. Meanwhile, the S&P 500 Index (SPX - 3,315.57) rose 34.5 points, or 1.1% on Tuesday. The Nasdaq Composite (IXIC - 10,963.64) added 184.8 points, or 1.7% during yesterday's trading session. Lastly, the Cboe Volatility Index (VIX - 26.86) fell 0.9 point, or 3.3% on the day yesterday.
Today, we will see the frenzy of key market events and high-profile earnings releases continue with more crude oil inventory data expected, as well as the Purchasing Managers' Index (PMI) results. Additionally, the Mortgage Bankers Association of America (MBA) will come out with a report today.
